Mary Kay Mages has been practicing estate planning, real estate, business, commercial, bankruptcy, agriculture, and elder law since 2004. She served her attorney colleagues as president of the Ninth District Bar Association in 2010-2011, and is also a member of the Brown County and Minnesota State Bar Associations. Mary Kay is a member of New Ulm’s Farm-City Hub Club which facilitates civic cooperation between business and farming professionals, and a former member of the Kiwanis Club of New Ulm which serves the needs of Brown County’s youth.
Mary Kay grew up in Sibley County and was her class valedictorian at Mayer Lutheran High School. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree, magna cum laude, from Valparaiso University in 1999 where she was a Christ College Honors College Scholar, Vice-Chair of the academic Honor Council, a member of the Kantorei chapel choir and an organ student. She received her Juris Doctor degree, magna cum laude, from Hamline University School of Law in 2004 where she was a Managing Editor of the Hamline Law Review, a member of the National Moot Court team and a two-time recipient of the school’s Agriculture Law Scholarship. She is also a Blackstone Fellow with the Blackstone Legal Fellowship, a leadership training program of the Alliance Defending Freedom.
Between her undergraduate and legal coursework, Mary Kay served two years as an LCMS volunteer missionary in the Slovak Republic where she taught English, American History and American Literature at a Lutheran high school newly reopened after the fall of communism. She then worked at the Minnesota House of Representatives as a legislative assistant to then Speaker of the House Steve Sviggum and later to Majority Leader Tim Pawlenty.
